Exposure + Immersion = Experience
Solutions for solving tomorrow's problems are based on past EXPERIENCE, but not just any experience. To be valuable, a particular so-called experience must meet two criterion.
Criterion #1: EXPOSURE
Exposure is the context within which we encounter the experience. Asking the following questions can help you assess the value of your EXPOSURE:
- Do you see the big picture of the process/project/issue/objective?
- Do you have chances to work with and talk to people who are not on your team?
- Do you have opportunities to help others solve their problems?
- Is there anyone who will come to you for ideas or solutions?
- Do you have an effective company-wide network?
- Do you very often involve others during problem-solving?
- etc.
Criterion #2: IMMERSION
Immersion literally refers to the depth of your understanding and your ability to learn from EXPOSURE. Asking the following questions can help you assess the value of your IMMERSION:
- Do you like what you do?
- Are you an expert of any subject matters?
- Do you always have alternative solutions for the issues you encounter?
- Do you often do work-related research or analysis?
- Have you attended any training programs that are related to the challenges you face?
- Do you often reflect on your experiences?
- Do you often synthesize the information you have collected?
- Do you have a coach, mentor, or buddy in your organization?
- etc.
EXPERIENCE is one of the key words a performance consultant's work is dependent upon. And while performance consultants help develop people's core competencies by designing and delivering training, coaching, or action learning projects, specific methodologies are by nature developed for creating EXPERIENCES for those who want to improve and develop.
Experts at VC see the word EXPERIENCE as a principle for creating our solutions. We have the courage, imagination, confidence, and competencies to initiate action and follow through to achieve better results. The solutions we develop—no matter the format—aim at helping people and organizations develop fundamental elements for performance improvement.
Focusing on the conditions of EXPOSURE and IMMERSION will underpin the valuable EXPERIENCE of your people. You will be more successful as an internal consultant in your efforts to help your clients achieve better business results or to develop your organizational human capital.
